Frequently Asked Questions
Anyone with a clinical license can purchase a system of CLARITY Direct Neurofeedback™. This includes physicians, therapists, nurses, acupuncturists, chiropractors and others. Technicians without a clinical license can administer sessions with clients, but they must be working under someone with a clinical license. The licensed clinician does not have to be in the room.
A senior practitioner is available by email or phone. Special support is given to new practitioners. An on-line discussion where various questions and topics are addressed. A regular monthly blog, either written or by video. Educational webinars. All Synaptic Tech marketing materials (brochures, business cards, etc.) will be available to certified practitioners.
A typical session is a half hour. It can be either integrated into a standard therapeutic session or stand-alone. You have the opportunity of working with new client populations, such as ADD/ADHD and autism, which up until now may not have been part of your clinical practice.
Being on any drug, prescription or illicit, does not interfere with progress. Clients tend to improve regardless of the drug or medication they may be taking.
Standard side effects are tired, “wired” (usually giddy, sometimes anxious), spacey, headache, and rarely, nausea. These usually last for just a few minutes; occasionally a few hours; and rarely a day or so. These side effects are temporary 100% of the time. The clinician lowers the “dose” on the next session and side effects are either gone or greatly diminished. Side effects are very rarely a significant issue during the course of a client’s sessions.
A potential practitioner must go through a 3-day official CLARITY Direct Neurofeedback™ course with a certified trainer and also pass an exam.
Absolutely not. No prior knowledge is required. Your professional “people skills” and ability to think like a clinician in your particular field are all that is required.
Insurance carriers consider both direct and traditional neurofeedback a form of biofeedback. Coverage varies state-by-state and carrier-by-carrier. Efforts are underway to make sure neurofeedback has better coverage in the future.
A typical session lasts half an hour. After taking a follow up history of events since the last session, the clinician cleans skin on the scalp. Small sensors are applied. Based on the client’s brainwaves, CLARITY Direct Neurofeedback™ sends tiny brief signals to to the client’s brain. Initial response is usually within a few minutes.
At the end of the weekend new practitioners will be awarded a “Certificate of Competency”. This indicates they have been trained in the fundamentals of CLARITY Direct Neurofeedback™ and are competent to use this technology. This certification is not officially “recognized” by any licensing body or official organization. It is on your wall to give assurance to your clients that you have had the proper training to use CLARITY Direct Neurofeedback™. The relevant certificate in the world of neurofeedback is from the BCIA (Biofeedback Certification International Alliance). BCIA training has several courses of didactic study and then formal testing. It is a voluntary certification and not required to become certified in CLARITY Direct Neurofeedback™.
